Watch Scientists Catch Crocodiles—in the Dark | National Geographic

Deep in the lagoons of the Yucatán Peninsula lives the powerful and elusive Morelet’s crocodile, which is crucial to the health of the local ecosystem. A group of Mexican scientists embarks on a nighttime venture to capture the reptiles and study their well-being. Although the crocodiles can navigate the dark lagoons with ease, the scientists have a harder time with the low visibility and dense mangroves—and with the quick reflexes of their targets.

Smaller than its American cousins, the Morelet’s crocodile survives in the diverse biosphere called Sian Ka’an, where conservationists, tour operators, and the local Maya people work together to protect the environment and promote sustainable development.

New Digital Series: Ingredients With George Zaidan (Trailer) | National Geographic

Coming September 15 – Join MIT-trained chemist and science educator George Zaidan as he tries to recreate everyday household products like toothpaste, lipstick, or shaving cream using only natural ingredients… and no recipe! He’ll have to decode long lists of intimidating chemical names, figure out what they all do, try and find natural substitutes, and then cook up the do-it-yourself versions in his chemistry lab (kitchen). While George may or may not succeed, we’ll all learn something new and surprising about the products we take for granted every day.

Ice Age Cave Art: Unlocking the Mysteries Behind These Markings | Nat Geo Live

When it comes to European Ice Age cave art, researchers have primarily focused their attention on the animal and human art, largely ignoring the geometric signs found to the sides of these beautiful paintings. At most sites, the geometric signs outnumber the animal paintings by two to one. That intrigued Genevieve Von Petzinger, a 2016 National Geographic emerging explorer. What could these rarely studied signs mean? Von Petzinger takes the stage to talk about her passion for exploration and her quest to uncover the hidden meaning behind these markings.

NASA to Make Contact With Asteroid That Could Threaten Earth | National Geographic

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission plans to return a sample of asteroid Bennu to Earth in 2023 so that scientists can study pristine material left over from the early solar system. With a small chance that Bennu could impact Earth late in the 22nd century, the mission will also allow scientists to study how gravity and thermal forces can alter an asteroid’s orbit, helping them predict where Bennu will be in the future.
