A geological survey around Hanzhong in northwest China discovered a large cluster of 49 natural sinkholes. Some of these sinkholes were more than 984 feet (300 meters) deep and one is 1,706 feet (520 meters) in diameter. Within these sinkholes were ten types of rare plants, primitive forests and Chinese giant flying squirrels. Because of their remote location, the sinkholes were well-preserved and may hold valuable information on the Earth’s paleoclimate.

Will This More Affordable Rocket Ship Take You to Space One Day? | Short Film Showcase

At the program’s zenith, NASA’s shuttle took only a handful of trips to space every year. Jeff Greason envisions something more like Southwest Airlines for his company XCOR. His cadre of aerospace engineers is hunkered down in the Mojave Desert, working on a spacecraft prototype with a very ambitious goal: four daily, safe, round-trip flights to space, five days a week. If XCOR can succeed, they’ll take more people to space in a period of six months (and for less money) than NASA did over 30 years. Production company Freethink documents the work of XCOR in this clip from the series The New Space Race.
