This Swing Is Just Too Much For Fainting Goat | National Geographic

A porch swing proved to be too much for Ricky the goat, who comically collapsed in fright at his Ohio home after experiencing the sudden motion.

The video was shot by the goat’s owner, David Taneyhill, and shows Ricky and his sister Lucy playing in a yard. When Lucy jumps onto the swing, causing it to rock towards Ricky, the latter stiffens and keels over in fright. His temporary paralysis lasts only a few moments before he jumps back up, unfazed.

Their bizarre display of fear appears humorous and only harms them if they faint from a tall surface. However, the goats are still susceptible to stress if purposefully frightened.

This strain of livestock are properly called Myotonic goats but they go by a number of common names, including: wooden leg goats, Tennessee fainting goats, stiff leg goats, and nervous goats.

They get their name from a genetic condition called myotonia congenita, which causes their muscles to briefly stiffen after they are startled.

The breed is one of only a few types of goats native to North America and, as their name might indicate, they are commonly found in Tennessee and neighboring states in the South.

Crested black macaques, one of seven macaque species on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia, are considered critically endangered. Mother macaques bear one baby every 20 months or so and do most of the parenting. Even the tiniest macaque youngsters in Tangkoko have a lot of freedom to play in and explore the forest, but they don’t stray far from their mothers. If hunters take a mother for meat, they may also capture her offspring for the pet trade.

Faced with the illegal logging of tropical forest for agriculture—which is fragmenting their habitat—the monkeys are suffering serious decline. Meanwhile conservationists are fighting government plans to open wildlands to roads and industries. Advocates believe that teaching children to see the value of a forest full of monkeys will bring lasting benefits and help reverse the decline.

The Asiatic lion, a subspecies that split from African lions around 100,000 years ago, once prowled across Asia and the Middle East. Sadly, the lions were hunted nearly to extinction, with as few as ten individuals left in existence by the late 1800s.

Today in Gujarat, India, the tiny population of wild Asiatic lions has found refuge in Gir National Park. With the help of conservation groups and local communities, the population has grown to around 500 individuals.

Come join National Geographic explorer Uri Golman in this week’s Today I Learned to find out more about these resilient animals.

Over the next four years, Uri Golman and his partner Helle Olsen will undertake twenty separate expeditions on all seven continents to document some of the last wild places on the planet.

Earth-Orbiting Telescope Sees Far Side of Sun for the First Time | National Geographic

NASA’s Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope, which orbits Earth, has observed solar activity on the far side of the sun. How is that possible?

How can a telescope orbiting Earth detect light emitted from the far side of the sun? NASA scientists tried to figure out the answer after the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope recorded gamma rays, the highest-energy form of light, originating from solar flares on the far side of the sun on three separate occasions. NASA’s Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) spacecraft captured images of each event from the far side, allowing scientists to connect these “beyond-the-limb” solar flares with observations from Fermi. Studying the sun may help scientists predict solar flares, which, when aimed at Earth, can cause both beautiful auroras and communications system disruptions.
