Netflix is one of the best places to catch original programing these days. Much like HBO, it offers rich characters, amazing acting, wonderful sets and top notch writing. It also has plenty of R rated content, fit for a network that doesn’t have to please advertisers. There’s a plethora of great television shows on Netflix but please for the love of god, ensure that your children don’t end up watching any of these shows! Just because Castlevania is animated, does not mean they should watch it. It’s actually one of the most violent shows on the network! Narcos is critically acclaimed but deals with some pretty notorious individuals, such as Pablo Escobar. Big Mouth may appear to be friendly towards children, and it does try to inform young minds, but it’s very graphic and explicit and downright weird at times. Orange is the New Black deals with life in prison, so you know it’s not age appropriate while House of Cards deals with the corruption of Washington D.C. BoJack Horseman deals with the dark side of fame and acting, so you know there’s going to be material that’s not good for kids to see. Altered Carbon has shown more skin that Game of Thrones in one season and 13 Reasons Why has some of the darkest depictions of teen life ever on TV. BoJack Horseman is one animated series kids should definitely avoid and Stranger Things is a horror-lite series that uses freaky experiments and monsters to rattle our minds. Oh-and let’s not forget Marvel’s The Punisher, which is really, really violent.

Japanese Role Playing Games, also known as JRPGs, are an unusual bunch of games to say the least. They involve sprawling stories, a unique cast of characters and have revolutionized the genre with things like turn-based combat and party management.
Some of these games have defined pop culture and gaming as well. Think of Final Fantasy and all the games in the franchise spanning decades. Most people even forget that Pokemon is technically a JRPG. Hey, if it’s from Japan and a role playing game, its a JRPG.
Of course, RPGs have their shortcomings as well. We can all name a time when there was a funky / funny translation with the dialogue and some hokey cutscenes. Do we need to bring up the Tidus laugh scene? While these games can get silly, they can also get really, really sad. It’s common for beloved characters to die as it’s often necessary to progress the plot. Other times, it’s not even a playable character, but an NPC that is close to your JRPG protagonist. This gives them motivation, but sometimes, it can hit a little too hard and make us feel terrible.

Donald Glover is one of the most talented people in show business these days. A modern renaissance man, he’s an acclaimed actor, writer, rapper and music producer. He made his start in an internet series based out of NY University and got to writing spec scripts for The Simpsons before getting signed by Tina Fey to write on 30 Rock. The fact that he wrote spec scripts for the Simpsons is quite interesting as he was raised Jehovah Witness, meaning that he grew up without TV and without watching the Simpsons. But that didn’t stop his creative streak. Born on an army base, Glover was always into the arts and theatre and was writing rhymes since he was a kid. He’s also a super geek and the character Miles Morales, the new Spider Man in the comics, is based in part on Glover himself. Glover went to voice Morales in Ultimate Spider Man. He also loves Star Wars and will be playing Lando Calrissian in the upcoming Han Solo film! He won breakout performance in his first season of Community and since leaving the show, has gone on to work on Atlanta, a show he dubbed the Twin Peaks for rappers. He also is a successful rapper himself, working under the moniker Childish Gambino. The name is the product of a Wu Tang Clan name generator found online. He wrote a companion script to his album “Because the internet” and actually hid pieces of a song on a website, making fans work for their secret music. Talk about someone who likes to keep busy!
