In the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic, baby fulmar hunting is an annual August activity. The Faroese depend on seasonal hunting and fishing as a major part of their diet and lifestyle.

At the end of each summer, baby fulmar birds fall from their nests in the fjords, where they bob in the water because they are too fat to fly. During the week or so before they manage to lose weight and take off, the Faroese go out in boats to scoop them from the sea and eat them.

MUNCHIES went baby fulmar hunting with local Høgni Mohr, a writer by profession and a hunter in his spare time. He caught birds for his family and friends to last throughout the coming year. He showed us, via the fulmar feast, what it means to get a local meal in the Faroe Islands.

This towering stack is best shared!!!

At the base is a battered and deep-fried slice of creamy, cheesy macaroni pasta. A dollop of spicy homemade tomato and eggplant ketchup is spread upon the base and topped with ample fresh peppery rocket leaves. Next, strips of juicy chicken thigh meat slowly braised in pepsi, smoked paprika, garlic and onions, then shaped and rolled in bacon breadcrumbs before deep-frying for a crispy coating. Another battered macaroni slice completes this monstrosity. Rhett’s has added cheese (as if there wasn’t already enough) and plenty of fiery heat from red chillies and sriracha.

In this episode of The MUNCHIES Guide to Tehran, Gelareh feeds tankfuls of paddlefish and beluga—valued at up to $35,000 per fish—at the nation’s first home of farm-raised caviar, Shilat Fish Farm. Eventually, these prized bottom-dwellers will be killed and harvested in a factory in Northern Iran, but currently they live in conditions similar to their species’ natural ocean habitat.

In the spirit of farm-to-table fine dining, Gelareh gets the royal treatment at Li Dona, a members-only restaurant and jazz lounge. She learns that when it comes to fish eggs, bigger is not necessarily better, as she tastes spoonfuls of “black gold” on toast served with butter, onion, egg, pepper, and lemon juice.
