The 400-Year-Old Swedish Dessert That Will Make You Dizzy

In this episode of MUNCHIES Guide to Sweden, Ivar’s trip to the Skåne region kicks up a few surprises. First, we learn about Spettkaka, a meringue dessert which has been given PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) status under European Union law. For lunch, Ivar stops in Malmö to find out about the huge impact of falafel on the city. And Swedes love to celebrate with food, so Ivar ends the day with a goose feast in Lund to celebrate a festival called Mårten Gås.

Swedish Smörgâsbord: Surviving Fermented Herring (Part 1)

In the Munchies Guide to Sweden, host Ivar Berglin explores the culinary offerings of Europe’s emerging culinary star. From reindeer to fermented herring, Ivar explores the dishes that define his nation and discover how a fresh culinary approach, New Nordic Cuisine, is shaping the future.

In our opening episode, Ivar travels to Goteborg, Sweden’s fish capital, to put together a Swedish smörgâsbord with catch fresh from the sea. Then he tries one of Sweden’s weirdest dishes, surströmming – fermented herring. Ivar’s day finishes in Lysekil where he meets two fishermen who harvest Swedish oysters before eating the freshest possible shellfish on a secluded island.

Now you can watch Nonna catch up on your YouTube comments, and even respond to the remarks and questions of a lucky few of you. Hey, just because she’s a nonagenerian doesn’t mean that she’s clueless about the ways of the ‘net.
