Project Inspired By: The Science Kits of 30 years ago.

WARNING:

This video is only for entertainment purposes. If you rely on the information portrayed in this video, you assume the responsibility for the results. This should never be attempted without adequate training and full understanding of all risks involved. Misuse, or careless use, of nitrogen triiodide may result in serious injury, death, and/or permanent damage to equipment and property. Check local laws and ordinances to ensure compliance. Have fun, but always think ahead, and remember that every project you try is at YOUR OWN RISK.

Project History & More Info:

4 years ago a guy named Ken told me he missed the days of real science. He said the kinds of science kits you would get under the tree at christmas had black powder, as well as an experiment you could do where you mixed a couple of chemicals that would dry out, and explode the instant they were touched, and that it would billow up into a beautiful purple cloud.

This fascinated me, so I spent some time on the internet researching what this chemical could be, and discovered it was called “Nitrogen Triiodide”.

The problem with making it is that it required iodine crystals, which seems you can’t obtain without putting your name on a list. But there are ways to make it.

Thanks to creators like NurdRage and Make, I learned how to synthesize iodine crystals, and adapted the methods to work with off-the-shelf chemicals.

I’ve been practicing this experiment for 4 years, and want to impress on anyone reading that this chemical is very dangerous and isn’t meant to be duplicated by the general public. Only by skilled, trained, and responsible persons who are in a position to take responsibility for any results their actions may cause.

(360º Video) Starting a Fire with a Sandwich bag

I took my family camping this weekend and started a fire with a sandwich bag, and water from the stream.

Some quick links to a few of the materials I used:

[✓] Ziploc bags: http://amzn.to/2cGi6WC
[✓] Samsung Gear 360: http://amzn.to/2cGj84Q

The video is 360, so if you’re on your phone, look around. If you’re on your computer, drag the screen around with your mouse.

For some of you this is probably as much fun to watch as paint drying. LOL! But it was a great experience we had as a family, and we wanted to share it with you. Not to mention this is actually a cool survival skill you can practice yourself.

I filled the baggie half way with water, then twisted it to form a liquid sphere. It’s important to make sure no air is trapped inside the ball.

For the initial tinder, I crushed up dry bark into a powder and let it smolder until it got smoking really well. Then I transferred it into a bundle of dead grass, and blew gently until enough heat built up to burst into flame. From there it was just a matter of adding small kindling, a few bigger branches, then enjoying hot dogs with my wife and kids.

Project History & More Info:

I originally made my silicone mold with a 2 part mix from a special effects supply company. I used real LEGO bricks set on a LEGO base, and built a makeshift retaining wall with bricks and play-dough.

I didn’t plan to make a tutorial on how to make the mold, but I’ve been inundated with requests for the last year, so I finally did it! 🙂

It’s amazing to see how much detail the silicone can transfer to the final gummy products. If you look closely at my candies you can even see the little “LEGO” text on top of the gummy LEGO studs.

Project History & More Info:

I was amazed while doing a Google image search to come across a picture of a coin floating in a cup of water. I knew paperclips could float, but never thought coins would!

I immediately filled up a container with water and began testing every american coin I had around the house to see if I could get one to work. I didn’t believe they would, but thought it would be mind blowing if one actually did.

After many failed attempts, I went back to the picture and studied it in more detail to see if it was a hoax or not.

On close inspection, and with a little more research, I learned the coin was actually a 1 YEN coin from Japan, and was made of aluminum. This made it nearly 3 times lighter than any of my other American coins, and explained why it could float, and the others couldn’t.

We had some Japanese exchange students living with us over the years, and I got some 1 YEN coins to experiment with, and they worked no problem.

Pretty cool trick, and I understand it will work with currencies from other countries as well, so long as the coins are made of aluminum!

Have fun! 🙂
