2014 Porsche 911 Turbo S: The Most Capable Grand Tourer? Ignition Ep. 104

On this episode of Ignition, Jonny Lieberman has a go with perhaps the most capable grand touring car on the market, the new Porsche 911 Turbo S. Combining 560 horsepower, upwards of 553 lb-ft of torque and several cows’ worth of leather. Embarking on a cross continental trip in the dead of winter, Jonny begins in frosty Georgia and heads all the way back to Motor Trend’s headquarters in Southern California. Along the way he traverses ten States, meets up with friends like Randy Pobst and John Hennessey, examines why Americans are so found of road trips and just generally enjoys the hell out of one of the quickest production cars on earth, the mighty 911 Turbo S.

Ignition appears every other Monday on the Motor Trend youtube channel. http://www.youtube.com/motortrend

Geneva motor show 2014: Race-bred Honda Civic Type-R concept

The new Honda Civic Type R concept has been revealed at the Geneva motor show. Its extreme styling underlines its performance — Honda is targeting a sub-eight Nurburgring lap time.

The Honda Civic Type R concept, as significant in its importance as it is dramatic in appearance, closely previews a production model that is just a year away from showrooms. The car’s extreme appearance bears out Honda’s claim that the Type R is not so much a hot version of a standard Civic as a road-legal version of a racing car.

It is more than 30mm lower than a standard Civic and distinguished by bulging wheelarches, a massive front spoiler and perhaps the most distinctive rear wing ever to see service on the back of the hatchback. Only the roof, front doors and unadorned rear tailgate are shared with a regular Civic hatch.

Ferrari says the new California T can accelerate from rest to 62mph in 3.6 seconds and has a top speed of 196mph, both marginal improvements over the old model. Speaking at the Geneva show, Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo said its 8-cyl turbocharged engine is first in a quarter of a century. He said: “Maybe you remember the last one, the F40.” We do, very fondly.

Geneva motor show 2014: Lighter and more powerful Audi TT revealed

The new Audi TT has made its world debut at the Geneva motor show. The third-generation model sports an evolved style, and is both lighter and more powerful than the outgoing model.

Seen here officially for the first time, the new TT will go on sale in the UK this autumn. For its third incarnation, the TT has been given an all-new exterior design that looks sleeker while retaining similar proportions and dimensions to its predecessor as well as a comparable silhouette. The design combines more precise detailing up front, crisper feature lines within the body, a boldly curved roof and significantly altered rear end.

Described as being new from the ground up, the latest TT also receives a sophisticated and larger 2+2 interior that features a contemporary digital instrument panel and clean-looking dashboard similar in appearance to that found in the Audi A3.

The new McLaren 650S is faster than the iconic McLaren F1 hypercar, according to its maker. McLaren says the 650S coupé can reach 62mph in 3.0sec and 124mph in 8.4sec – and the Spider is barely slower.

The new McLaren 650S is capable of hitting 207mph and can cover the standing quarter mile in 10.5sec, which is 0.6sec less than the F1. The car was revealed at the Geneva motor show, where a new 650S Spider was also shown. McLaren promises a improved driving experience over the 12C on which it is based, and a larger price tag.
