The Red Bull Air Race World Championship will return to the United States on September 6-7 with its first-ever stop in the Lone Star State, and this past spring two-time champion and native Texan Kirby Chambliss took to the skies to celebrate. Hitting speeds of more than 230 mph over DFW in his aerobatic plane, Chambliss raised eyebrows and even sparked a few 911 calls. As Red Bull Air Race prepares to come in for a landing in Texas, take a ride from inside Chambliss’s cockpit as he buzzes by the Texas Star at Fair Park, chicanes around trees in the Trinity River Bend and flies under an overpass on the way to Fort Worth, landing at Texas Motor Speedway.
The Red Bull Air Race World Championship features the world’s best race pilots in a pure motorsport competition that combines speed, precision and skill. Using the fastest, most agile and lightweight racing planes, pilots navigate a low-level aerial track made up of air-filled pylons 80 feet high at speeds up to 230 mph.

Davin’s choice, a 1967 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Convertible, has been called “unsafe at any speed.” The Corvair boasts a 2.7L, 2,683cc flat-6 engine behind the rear wheels. Matt’s pick, a 1986 Pontiac Fiero SE, has been known to catch fire at the most inopportune times. The Pontiac has the mid-engine 2.4L “Iron Duke” inline four. Matt and Davin discuss the incredibly passionate following for these classics, and try to figure out the magic behind their cult status.
