On this Preview of Roadkill Garage Episode 43, After two years of neglect on the farm, David Freiburger and Steve Dulcich finally get the Off-Road Challengerback into working order with a fresh 360 powerplant and 727 trans from a $1,500 parts truck with the hopes of putting it in a mud drag race. Will the Off-Road Challenger’s new heart survive another beating and out-mud the competition?
The Ford Ranger is already one of our favourite pickup trucks, so imagine how much we’ll like it if Ford Performance gets involved and turns it into the Ford Ranger Raptor.
Well, that’s what we’ve got. There’s a new twin-turbo 2.0-litre diesel engine powering it but that’s not the main event. What makes this Ranger a Raptor is the adoption of Fox racing shocks and coilovers front and rear, rather than leaf springs at the back.
The whole chassis has been beefed up, with the whole back end basically redesigned to turn a worksite vehicle into one that’s happy bashing, Baja style, across dunes, rough rocks, and dirt.
At a price, that is, of nearly £50,000 in the UK.

Here’s a fast estate straight line speed test with a bit of a difference.
Two cars here are the obvious new ways of going really, really fast while having space for, I don’t know, some luggage or a dog or something. They’re a Mercedes-AMG E63 S estate, and a Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo.
Both make more than 600bhp. In fact, the Porsche makes quite a lot more, but is heavier on account of the fact that it’s also part-electrified, and can even be plugged in, so carries around the weight of its batteries. Which should make for a close-run contest.
Then there’s the outsider: an Audi RS6, the V10 version, made between 2008 and 2011. As standard this would be somewhat down on power over the other two, but our used contender has had a power upgrade to also make considerably more than 600bhp.
Their respective values are quite different: you can pick up a lovely example of this RS6, including modifications, for £40,000. The Mercedes is a bit more than twice that, and the Panamera is a bit more than that again.
So what’s the fastest, and best value way, to absolutely terrify your dog*?

For 2019, BMW’s superbike, the S1000RR, has been redeveloped to be lighter, more powerful and even cleverer than ever before.
Ariel’s fourth Atom puts over 300bhp from a Honda Civic Type R engine through the back wheels and weighs little over 500kg.
The 720S has monstered everything to 60mph recently, including a Senna in an Autocar video, but will it keep its crown as the drag race king, being 49kg heavier in Spider form?
