Toyota GR Yaris meets Honda Civic Type R | Which is 2020’s best hot hatch? | Autocar

The new Toyota GR Yaris is a giant slayer of a hot hatchback. We love its rally-inspired four-wheel drive traction and its astonishing grip.

But does it have the measure on the road of our favourite hot hatch of the moment – the Honda Civic Type R?

The GR Yaris joins us with the optional Circuit Pack, which means it costs £33,495. It has 257bhp from its 1.6-litre three-cylinder engine, which makes it good for 0-62mph in 5.5sec and a limited top speed of 143mph.

The 2020 Honda Civic Type R is a Limited Edition. Lighter and leaner than the regular Type R, it costs £39,995 and has 316bhp from its larger, 2.0-litre turbo engine. More powerful, then, but being front-wheel drive, it hits 0-62mph in 5.8sec, though can go on to a 169mph top speed.

It’s the Toyota that has been making the headlines recently but only a mug would write off the Honda, which is such an enjoyable and engaging hatch. Watch on to see what we think.

Gunther Werks ‘remastered 993’ at Laguna Seca | Lap time: 1m:30.99s | Autocar

Will the 2020s be the decade of the restomod? Here’s why we think it could be:

https://www.autocar.co.uk/opinion/new-cars/rise-restomods-shows-potential-werks

And in this vid is a rather serious take on the theme. California-based Gunther Werks takes 993-series 911s and turns them into something rather more hardcore. Its aim is not to keep a car that looks period. Instead it imagines what would have happened if it went beyond-GT3.

It pares the chassis back to its base shell, widens and stiffens it and incorporates so much carbon fibre that the finished ‘993 Remastered by Gunther Werks’ weighs a little over 1200kg.

Its 4.0-litre air-cooled engine makes 435bhp and prices start at a little under £400,000, plus your 993; so it’s a niche area of the sports car business, but one of the more interesting for us here at Autocar.

It’s also clearly very fast. Here’s GT and touring car driver Randy Pobst lapping it at Laguna Seca in 1m30.99s. Gunther Werks says that’s the fastest time ever set by an air-cooled 911 with number plates, but more significantly for us, it’s almost as fast as a McLaren P1.

Volvo P1800 Cyan Racing review | Amazing restomod tested | Autocar

Spoiler alert: the Volvo P1800 Cyan Racing is a wonderful thing. Cyan Racing, the Swedish racing team that is Volvo’s official race partner, has taken an old Volvo P1800 coupe and turned it into something brilliant.

There’s not much original P1800 left. Cyan takes a few bits of the structure and rebuilds an entire car around it, including a 2.0-lire 414bhp turbocharged engine, double-wishbone suspension all around and plenty of carbon fibre.

The result is a car that costs nearly £400,000 and weighs just 990kg. Cyan doesn’t quote 0-60mph numbers of a top speed, but given the P1800 Cyan has no driver aids and a manual gearbox, we reckon it’ll hit 60mph in under 5.0seconds and go on to 170mph.

Watch on to see what Matt Prior thinks of this fabulously-constructed restomod.

Promoted | Why the Ford Puma is an Autocar Awards Game Changer

In this year’s Autocar Awards, we named the new Ford Puma a Game Changer – one of a select group of cars that, in our opinion, defy conventions for their class.

Stylish, comfortable and well-equipped, it melds everything you need from a compact crossover, adding the fun handling of a small hatchback and a powerful and economical 1.0-litre mild-hybrid engine for good measure.

The Ford Puma is the first small SUV we’ve named a Game Changer, and it sits in a privileged pack for 2020 alongside the Porsche Taycan, Aston Martin DBX and Polestar 1. That’s why we asked Autocar’s Mark Tisshaw and Tom Morgan to explain in more depth why it’s such a unique standout model – and why it deserves our top accolade.

To find out more about the award-winning Ford Puma go to https://www.ford.co.uk/cars/new-puma

Honda E vs Mini Electric review | Funky EVs head to head | Autocar

Welcome to a good old-fashioned review of two very new-fashioned cars.

One is the new Honda E. A loveable small electric car but with also quite a small range. It costs £28,660 (after government grant) and has 151bhp from its electric motor, which is good for 0-62mph in 8.3sec and a top speed of 90mph. Its WLTP range is 137 miles.

The other is the Mini Electric. It costs £24,400 (after the government grant), has 181bhp, can do 0-62mph in 7.3sec and has a top speed of 93mph and has a WLTP range of 144 miles.

They’re both, though, rather good fun to drive. Join our tester James Disdale as he puts the two head-to-head to see which comes out on top.

Review: 2021 Hyundai i20 N prototype | The Hyundai that wants to beat the Ford Fiesta ST

The new Hyundai i20 N won’t go on sale until 2021 but we’ve had a brief chance to drive the car in prototype form, ahead of its launch.

When it arrives, we think the 1.6-litre turbocharged hot hatchback will be aimed squarely at the Ford Fiesta ST. The raw ingredients are all there. It has 204hp (201bhp), drives through an optional limited-slip differential and has a six-speed manual gearbox. It’ll do 0-60mph in 6.7 seconds and have a top speed of 143mph.

As tested here, on both road and track, the car is around 95% complete, according to Hyundai’s N engineers. Find out what Matt Prior thinks of it in a Nurburgring test.

We expect the i20 N to go on sale in the spring of 2021, priced at around £20,000. We’ll have more details nearer the time, so if you give us a subscribe or turn on post notifications, you won’t miss a thing.

New Ferrari 812 GTS review | Is 2020 Superfast convertible super and fast? | Autocar

The new Ferrari 812 GTS is a roofless version of Ferrari’s rather brutal 812 Superfast. Which, what with the 800hp (789bhp) from its 6.5-litre V12 engine is both super and fast.

What hasn’t changed is the accelerative force and the top speed. Ferrari claims a 0-60mph time of less than 3.0sec and a a top speed of 211mph+.

What has changed is the access you get to open air, and also the weight – up 75kg – plus the suspension tuning. Has Ferrari changed the behaviour of its Super GT car for the better? And does it have the measure of an Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante or Lamborghini Avendator SVJ Roadster? Join our testers for a full UK review.

Volkswagen ID 3 v Nissan Leaf review | which is the best new EV? | Autocar

The 2020 Volkswagen ID 3 is VW’s bespoke new battery electric vehicle. And although it’s not the first EV on the market – it’s not even VW’s first EV – it still feels like a significant car.

Here we pitch it against its key competitor, which is also a landmark car in its own right and is still the world’s most successful EV, the 2020 Nissan Leaf.

In terms of range, battery size, 0-60mph time and top speed these two are pitched extremely close to each other. So join our testers as they review the pair and deduce which is best.
