How did superhero movies evolve to dominate the box office? Subscribe to our channel: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-Screenrant
Superhero movies are, without any shadow of a doubt, the most popular thing in Hollywood today – and that’s certainly not something that’s just happened overnight.
They’ve existed for several decades, but they have only reached their current levels of popularity in this new millennium.
In this documentary, we’ll be taking a take a look at the path superhero movies have taken to reach their current status of popularity.
We’ll go all the way back to 1920, when the silent movie The Mark of Zorro became the first superhero movie of note.
We’ll look at the early Marvel and DC movies in the 1940s and 1950s.
We’ll look at Christopher Reeve’s Superman in 1978, which was the first superhero movie in the mould of those we moved today.
And we’ll look at how all of that impacted the more modern movies, which started with the likes of Blade, X-Men and Spider-Man in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Since then, there have been more offbeat examples like superhero parodies, animated family superhero movies – and, of course, the blockbusters in the MCU, DCEU and X-Men movie franchises.
We’ll also look at what makes a good superhero movie and what could happen in the superhero movie genre going forward – because there’s still a heck of a lot of untouched material to tap into!

From visionary filmmakers James Cameron (AVATAR) and Robert Rodriguez (SIN CITY), comes ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL, an epic adventure of hope and empowerment. When Alita (Rosa Salazar) awakens with no memory of who she is in a future world she does not recognize, she is taken in by Ido (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate doctor who realizes that somewhere in this abandoned cyborg shell is the heart and soul of a young woman with an extraordinary past. As Alita learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield her from her mysterious history while her street-smart new friend Hugo (Keean Johnson) offers instead to help trigger her memories. But it is only when the deadly and corrupt forces that run the city come after Alita that she discovers a clue to her past – she has unique fighting abilities that those in power will stop at nothing to control. If she can stay out of their grasp, she could be the key to saving her friends, her family and the world she’s grown to love.
