تسارع العلماء من حول العالم لتفسير هذه الظاهرة الغريبة وأول التفاسير التي ظهرت هي وجود طحالب محبة للأملاح تدعى “دوناليلا سالينا ( Dunaliella Salina ) تفرز صبغة حمراء في الماء لكي تزيد من أمكانية سطح الماء من إمتصاص حرارة أكبر من الشمس لتمكن هذه الطحالب من توليد طاقة أكبر, وهو تحليل سرعان ما تم نفيه لأن هذه الأنواع من الطحالب هي طحالب بحرية تعيش في المياه المالحة وليس في المياه العذبة كما هو الحال في نهر يانغتسي وهذه الحالة حصلت مع بحيرات مالحة كبحيرة في ( كاماراج ) Camargue الفرنسية التي تحولت إلى اللون الأحمر للتركيز العالي للأملاح
بعد أن أستبعد العلماء الأسباب الطبيعية كمسبب لتحول النهر إلى هذا اللون لم يتبقى إلا الأسباب الخاصة بظواهر التلوث المتسبب بواسطة الإنسان وأستذكر بعض العلماء تحولا قديما حصل للون النهر في ما مضى الذي تبين أن سببه كان سكب كمية ضخمة من الأصباغ الحمراء التي صادرتها الدولة في مياه النهر.
وتؤيد فكرة سرعة تلون النهر بكامله إلى اللون الأحمر وجود ظواهر تلوث صناعي لهذا النهر الذي تحيط فيه أكبر التجمعات الصناعية الصينية وهو ما نفته الحكومة الصينية نظرا للرقابة والقوانين المفروضة للحفاظ على نظافة النهر على المناطق الصناعية مبقية الأمر للتحقيق والتحليل والتكهنات المختلف فيها حتى اليوم .
