General election: Jo Swinson threatens legal action over debate

Sky News is proposing a live televised election debate, between Boris Johnson, Jeremy Corbyn and Jo Swinson.

Ms Swinson, the Lib Dem leader, has already signed up – and is considering legal action after being excluded from an ITV debate, between the Prime Minister and the leader of the opposition.

ITV have tonight defended their debate plans – and made clear it would be just one part of a package of programming in which other parties would feature.

Cherie Blair calls for action against Kuwait over jailing of Marsha Lazareva

The jailing of a Russian businesswoman in Kuwait has led to calls for sanctions to be imposed on the Gulf state.

Marsha Lazareva had worked there for a decade when she was accused of embezzlement and sentenced to 10 years in prison with hard labour.

She’s maintained her innocence throughout – and a high profile international campaign to free her resulted in her release from jail on bail after more than a year – but she’s still not allowed to leave Kuwait with her five-year-old son.

Her supporters include Neil Bush, the son of former President George W Bush, and five members of the US Congress have called for sanctions to be imposed.
