Whaley Bridge heroes: ‘I thought I was a goner’

A police officer who put his life on the line to save the dam at Whaley Bridge has revealed for the first time just how close they came to disaster.

At the height of the crisis in the Derbyshire town in August, emergency services were told the dam at Toddbrook Reservoir was very likely to collapse and send over a billion litres of water into the town.

Harry Redknapp remembers Martin Peters as ‘a special footballer’

England World Cup winner Martin Peters was “a special footballer”, his former West Ham teammate Harry Redknapp has said.

The former England manager was among those to pay tribute to the midfielder, who died on Saturday aged 76.

Peters scored one of the goals that netted victory for the national side in the 1966 final.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been enjoying “private family time” in Canada, Kensington Palace has confirmed.

Harry and Meghan’s spokeswoman ended speculation over their whereabouts by confirming the couple and their seven-month-old son Archie are spending their six-week Christmas break in the country Meghan called home for seven years.

After apologising for being on holiday in Hawaii while large areas of New South Wales burned, he was due to visit the fire service’s HQ on Sunday.

As the blazes spread across almost 100,000 acres, Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack admitted there “absolutely” needed to be more action on climate change.

Duke of Edinburgh taken to hospital as ‘a precautionary measure’

The Duke of Edinburgh has been admitted to hospital.

The 98-year-old was taken to the King Edward VII hospital in London from the Sandringham Estate where the family is staying for Christmas.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said his admission was a ‘precautionary measure’.

US vents fury as Anna Sacoolas charged over Harry Dunn death

The United States has described a decision to launch extradition proceedings against the wife of an American diplomat over the death of a British teenager as an “egregious abuse”.

Anne Sacoolas has now been charged with death by dangerous driving after Harry Dunn was killed in a road accident in Northamptonshire.

She left the UK following the collision claiming diplomatic immunity.

Harry’s mother says the family are now one step closer to justice as Sky’s Lisa Dowd reports.

Saudi royal issues Iran warning

After a year of mounting tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran, a member of the Saudi royal family has told Sky News the threat of conflict is not receding.

Tensions escalated in the summer when four oil tankers were attacked and a British-flagged vessel was seized in the Straits of Hormuz.
