As Soran sees his last chance slip away, he rushes to the top of the mountain as the Nexus Ribbon passes through the atmosphere. Soran desperately tries to jump into the Nexus Ribbon, but ultimately fails. As Picard tends to Kirk, Soran angrily rushes them. Picard grabs Soran’s small phaser and blasts him in the chest. From behind, Kirk knocks out Soran with a backhand to the face. Picard tells Kirk “there’s a control PADD on his belt!” Kirk grabs the device and inputs some commands on it, affecting the launcher for Picard. Waking up, Soran grabs a small phaser from his boot. An alternate take of the Picard-Kirk horseback scene. Kirk compares the Nexus to orbital skydiving; exciting for the first few minutes but not really accomplishing anything. Picard claims that “you needn’t be on the bridge of a starship to make a difference” and his request to “come back with me” is also said with more gusto than in the theatrical version. As the scene continues, the children bring Picard a Christmas present as he marvels at the beauty of the tree. Picard eagerly opens his gift. The smallest boy remarks “It’s a SACK-tent!” Picard happily laughs and replies “Yes, it’s a sextant.” Inquiring where they obtained it, they reply “it’s a secret.” Picard declares that makes it a doubly-special gift.
