Can Fake Furs Help Protect Leopards? | National Geographic

Leopard furs are a crucial element of traditional dress during the Shembe Festival, an annual gathering of members of the Shembe religion in South Africa. Tristan Dickerson, of big cat conservation organization Panthera, discusses how introducing fake leopard furs to traditions like Shembe might help preserve populations for leopards, which have been classified as near-threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, without impacting local communities.

As humans encroach on leopards’ habitat, the big cats are adapting. Can we do the same? Read more about learning to live with leopards:
