Cattoos: How This Tattoo Artist Helps to Immortalize Beloved Pets | Short Film Showcase

Betty Rose is a “cattoo” artist—a cattoo being a tattoo of a cat. The first cattoo she made is on her husband’s leg, and since that piece she’s gone from making cattoos sporadically to doing them on a weekly basis. Rose knows how important memorializing pets means to her clients—she did it with Patches, her childhood cat. Shot by Emily Sheskin, this short film is part of the Sidekick Series, a short web-doc series dedicated to adopted pets and those who adopt them.

National Geographic is the world’s premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Through their world-class scientists, photographers, journalists, and filmmakers, Nat Geo gets you closer to the stories that matter and past the edge of what’s possible.

In 2015, Wasfia Nazreen, a 2016 National Geographic emerging explorer, became the first Bangladeshi to summit the highest peak on each of the seven continents, a mountaineering feat known as climbing the seven summits. As a girl Nazreen struggled with her society’s expectations of how a woman should act and behave, which drove her as a young woman to enter the nonprofit world and work to empower women. Eventually Nazreen conceived of the idea to combine her passion for mountain climbing and her passion for helping women into one mission— summiting the seven summits, symbolic of the everyday struggles Bangladeshi women face in society. Nazreen takes the stage to share the challenges she has faced as a woman in Bangladesh, her passion for mountain climbing, and her efforts to empower women in Bangladesh and around the world.

Exclusive: Is This the Skull of Slave Rebellion Leader Nat Turner? | National Geographic

Is this Nat Turner’s skull? The legacy of Nat Turner continues to be rewritten. An enslaved African-American preacher, he led a small army of slaves to kill 55 white Virginians beginning on August 21, 1831. The rebellion was quickly suppressed, and Turner went into hiding. He was captured just over two months later, tried, and sentenced to death. It’s rumored that, in an attempt to crush his legacy, his body was decapitated and pieces of his tanned skin were given out as souvenirs. For the past decade, what’s believed to be Turner’s skull has been in the possession of Richard Hatcher, former mayor of Gary, Indiana. Recently, he turned it over to Turner’s fourth-generation descendants, who have enlisted forensic experts for testing.
