Deep inside the Kantemo Cave of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, you’ll see unique snakes that hang from the cave ceiling and catch bats in mid-air. These snakes evolved to hunt and eat bats that fly out of the darkest corners of the cave. Tourists can test their fears and witness firsthand this predatory behavior—seen only in a few places around the world—if they can stomach the claustrophobia, utter darkness, and thousands of bats flying around them while, just a few feet away, dozens of serpents hang from crevices in the cave ceiling, waiting to snatch their next meal.

For the first time in centuries, scientists have exposed the original surface of what is traditionally considered the tomb of Jesus Christ. As the slab of marble was removed, revealing the Holy Bed, conservationists were surprised to discover something their instruments hadn’t detected: a layer of debris beneath the marble cover. They will analyze the debris to learn more about the ancient resting place.

Located in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Old City of Jerusalem, the tomb has been covered by marble cladding since at least A.D. 1555, and most likely centuries earlier. The modest tomb has never before been photographed, and no drawings exist. This is the first time anyone alive today has seen the Holy Bed.

This burial shelf is now enclosed by a small structure known as the Edicule (from the Latin aedicule, or “little house”), which was last reconstructed in 1808-1810 after being destroyed in a fire. The Edicule and the interior tomb are currently undergoing restoration by a team of scientists from the National Technical University of Athens under the direction of Chief Scientific Supervisor Professor Antonia Moropoulou.

The National Geographic Society, with the blessing of the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem and other religious communities, formed a strategic alliance with the National Technical University of Athens for cultural heritage preservation. For an exclusive look at the restoration project, watch Explorer on National Geographic Channel, coming in November.

Learning the Art of Traditional Tattooing on the Cook Islands | Short Film Showcase

Englishman Croc Coulter lives in Rarotonga, the largest of the Cook Islands in the Pacific Ocean. He has become a master of the traditional Polynesian art of tātatau—an ancient tattooing process that involves using handmade tools of bone or tusks and ink to mark the skin. The artistry is to be bestowed or handed down in a ceremony, but the apprentice must first fit the bill. In this short film by Robert George, we learn how respect for tradition, tools, and designs are what will keep tātatau alive.

Rare Footage: Hundreds Gather at a 1920s African-American Baptism | National Geographic

The practice of communal outdoor baptism was—and in some cases still is—a central community event among both black and white evangelical churches in America. This home movie footage from Oklahoma, filmed in the mid-1920s by Reverend S. S. Jones, a minister and businessman who lived in the region, provides a penetrating view into the spiritual lives of people in the state’s many booming African-American towns. Rev. Jones had deep connections to the lives of those gathered around the water for the event, allowing him to record up close an event that some of the congregants may have remembered as among their lives’ most important moments.
