10 Creepy Halloween Specials That Will Give Kids Nightmares

Around the Halloween season, there is nothing we like more than to settle in with a big mug of hot chocolate, some Halloween candy that we have stolen from our children/nieces and nephews, and enjoy a marathon of some of the best Halloween special episodes that TV has to offer. Some are genuinely terrifying, while others make light of this creepy holiday. Either way, we love them, and in the days leading up to the big celebration, there is no better way to get into the spirit. From the classically creepy if not specifically Halloween-y Twilight Zone, where pretty much every episode is perfect for the season, to some amazing Buffy the Vampire Slayer specials that drive the Scooby gang crazy. Ryan Murphy’s Scream Queens knew just how to blend horror and camp to make the perfect Halloween special, and nobody did it better than the original Goosebumps from 1995. Martha Stewart shares her holiday crafting hilarities, and then American Horror Story really nailed the “horror” in season 1. Stranger Things gave us adolescent nostalgia and brought back our cringey trick or treating memories, and Community did what Community did best: mixed character driven stories with a zombie epidemic started by The Dean, of course. Freaks and Geeks’ Halloween episode was the perfect mix of sadness, humour, sweetness, and triumph, and the one show to rule them all when it comes to Halloween was, of course, The Simpsons Treehouse Of Horror. They nailed Twilight Zone and The Shining parodies along with original stories, weren’t afraid to get gross and revel in the horror. Like Maggie says, “this is indeed a disturbing universe.”

While not the scariest films out there, this series has managed to capture the hearts and minds of audiences all around the world with its simple, yet sadistic premise.

Or what about the fact that the writer and director of the films got his inspiration from a run in with a drunk driver? It’s October and that means it’s nearly Halloween. Now, we all know kids like to dress up to go trick or treating, but we wondered if there was an alternative to the usual ghosts, witches and pirate costumes you see every year. If you and your children are fans of video games, then we’ve got some great costumes.

Spider-Man is a staple of spooky season but, with Spider-Man for PS4 turning heads, we thought we’d include him here. For the ladies, there’s Metroid’s Samus Aran, while fans of scary games can, appropriately for October 31, go as Hello Neighbor or the characters from Five Nights At Freddy’s. We’ve also got Nintendo’s Toad, Sega’s Sonic The Hedgehog, Ash from Pokemon, and one of the Angry Birds, not to mention Mario and Yoshi!
