Video games are released all over the world, but there are different customs and cultures video game publishers must consider with each new game release. Costumes changes, character bios and other controversial elements are often edited for release in the United States. The culture and style of gaming in Japan is very different and this reflects some of the drastic changes that are made.

Pokemon have gone through a number of changes over the years, but there are also human characters like Rui who have been censored over outfit concerns. Jynx is a Pokemon who was criticized for the blackface appearance so the whole skin color needed to be changed for the character. In Zelda, Skull Kid went through a big change which included his face being made from a whole different material. The game Xenoblade Chronicles X features an underage character in a pretty revealing outfit. The United States version of Animal Crossing completely changed two character genders because the males were deemed too feminine. Mother 2 features an extended segment where players enter a dream world and a naked boy travels around the level. Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is a great survival horror game that ended up being filled with inappropriate outfits for US publishers. Street Fighter introduced a tough female fighter by the name of Poison, but the backstory to the character led censors to replace her with some generic fighter named Billy. It’s hard enough to make an animated film. It takes years for them to be produced, thanks largely in part to how long it takes the render and animate the scenes. But then the animators of these films actually take the time to tweak certain scenes for different regions around the world. Case in point, the rousing speech Buzz gives the other toys in Toy Story 2 is set to the American flag and anthem in the U.S. version, but is changed everywhere else in the world. Rochelle in Planes is Canadian in North America but her nationality, name and paint job differ depending where else you watch it. In a similar move, the news anchors in Zootopia are different and representative of the country in question. Language barriers are always an issue for countries that don’t speak or read English, so animators actually alter any scenes that have prominent English in them. Monsters University altered some colorful cupcakes and changed a “scary” banner to use symbols at one of the games. In Ratatouille, which is set in France, the English language was removed from a letter and other texts and swapped to French. In Up, the words “Paradise Falls” mean nothing if you can’t read them. So the animators fixed that. Wreck it Ralph has a background character unique to Japan, despite the original version of the character being a homage to a great Japanese filmmaker. Inside Out made a few changes as well, from a simple vegetable swap to changing an entire scene for the sake of sports.

Play a game in one part of the world and you might not realize that people in a different part of the world are playing a different version of that same game. Sometimes, that means a game has less blood and violence in one area while, other times, it means hot moments were changed or removed entirely.

For instance, Nazi imagery doesn’t fly in Germany because it hits a little too close to home. That’s not a problem for most games, but what happens to a game like Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus? That game is positively decked out in Nazi imagery. Or how about that infamous unicorn scene in The Witcher 3? It’s considered too racy in some locales. Everyone knows South Park likes to push buttons, but they pushed way too many buttons too hard in the Stick of Truth.

Alter your settings a certain way and Conan Exiles lets it all hang out…literally, but not for Xbox One players. The U.S. Call of Duty: World at War version is another game that’s missing its original Nazi imagery in Germany, but that’s not the only thing it’s missing.

Bravely Default, Monster Monpiece and Dungeon Travelers 2 all got some of their most salacious scenes either removed or changed when they came to the West. Even the original Contra was considered too violent when it first launched in the 1980’s in Europe and Australia. And it will come as no surprise to see just how Grand Theft Auto 3 got changed for some of its regional releases. Watch the video to see 10 popular games that look different around the world.

One of the most important parts of marketing a film is the posters. These single images capture our attention and intrigue us enough to go out and watch these films. Sometimes, posters become as iconic as the movies themselves. But did you know that posters look very different in other parts of the world? Whether it is for censorship reason or emphasizing other elements that appeal to different audiences, it is interesting to see what changes within each country.
The poster for Disney’s Frozen is pretty iconic in America. It is blue and features the title in big letters. Just under it, Olaf holds his own head, with 4 of the main characters buried in snow. In Japan, the poster is a little closer to what the story actually is.
Similarly, the poster for Big Hero 6 in America features a cute character. In Japan, we see a glimpse into the actual movie and the heroes that are in it.
