Star Wars fans were more than a little bummed when news was announced that the expanded Star Wars universe which spanned books, TV series, video games and more had been retconned in favor of a new trilogy of films. While it’s understandable that the filmmakers did this in order to free up their creativity and give themselves some storytelling flexibility, it’s also understandable why some fans were a little ticked off about it. But while the entire expanded universe might not be considered canon anymore, the new films have offered up more than a few hints that maybe it’s not as defunct as fans originally thought.
Specific visual references and names suggest the acclaimed Knights of the Old Republic video game could still be considered canon. Beyond these references, there are intriguing parallels between the game’s main character Revan and one of the new trilogy’s main characters Kylo Ren. Aside from their similar garb, the two seem to be following a similar character trajectory, and the decisions Revan made provide significant insights into where Kylo Ren might be headed. After all, Revan was originally a member of the Jedi Order before he and his ally Malak broke away and decided to join the Sith. Disillusioned by what the Sith had to offer, Revan and Malak went off to form their own Sith Empire. Their plan to recover the Star Forge and conquer the galaxy was eventually thwarted by the Jedi and Revan ultimately redeemed himself. Or did he?
