Dragon Ball’s status in the world of anime is positively legendary. In fact, Akira Toriyama’s 30-year-old creation stands as one of the most beloved anime series on the planet, proving just as popular in the United States as it has in its native Japan. Through multiple series, films, manga, video games and more, fans just can’t seem to get enough of this world and have spent countless hours theorizing about its numerous characters and situations.
Some of this theorizing has led to some interesting and, at times, dark places. For instance, while Goku might be the hero of the Dragon Ball universe, his actions are driven by selfishness as much as heroism. And has his existence actually contributed to the safety of Earth or served in its detriment? Saiyans achieve the level of Super Saiyans by concentrating negative energy such as anger and self hatred. Cell’s ability to procreate becomes more disturbing when you remember he absorbed the male and female twins Android 17 and 18. Kami is supposed to be Earth’s great protector, but he could have saved so many lives if he’d chosen to merge with his evil twin Piccolo. While young Saiyans are born with tails, there’s one theory that suggests some had their tails cut off when they were in their infancy. Gohan has always been willing to fight the good fight, but there’s a strong chance a number of his encounters have left him more mentally scarred than he’d be willing to admit. Though much has been made of the Super Saiyan form, it turns out that taking on the form isn’t all that special an achievement.
