Biggest ‘Sea Monster’ Fossil of Its Kind Reclassified | National Geographic

A close look at a specimen paid off for paleontologist Sven Sachs of the Bielefeld Natural History Museum in Germany. The fossil was originally discovered in the mid 1990s in Somerset, England. Sachs correctly identified the genus of the animal, now called Ichthyosaurus somersetensis. He then consulted with Ichthyosaur expert Dean Lomax of the University of Manchester. Lomax confirmed its identity. The newly-named fossil is the largest known example of its kind, making this species the biggest of these “sea dragons.”
