The nail trick. (eg. http://youtu.be/sQrz6sRjiVI). It’s been done many times with nails, but I hadn’t ever seen it done with matches. It’s surprisingly tricky, especially outside in a breeze.

It’s pretty hard to even balance 1 match on top of another, so for this quick experiment I tried using the technique from my “Gravity Puzzle” video to see if it would work.

It takes a bit of practice, but with some time and some patience, 15 matches will hold together, and can be balanced on top of one single matchstick.

I tried lighting them on fire to see what would happen, and impressively they stayed burning and balancing the majority of the time. If it weren’t for a slight breeze blowing them off, I doubt they would have even fallen at all.

Today, thanks to better early detection, there are 63% fewer deaths from heart disease than there were just a few decades ago. Thomas Insel, Director of the National Institute of Mental Health, wonders: Could we do the same for depression and schizophrenia? The first step in this new avenue of research, he says, is a crucial reframing: for us to stop thinking about “mental disorders” and start understanding them as “brain disorders.” (Filmed at TEDxCaltech.)
