The original opening to the movie was not just the simply champagne bottle tumbling through space as seen in the theatrical release. Originally, the bottle would have been inter-cut with shots of Chekov and Scotty looking for something in the sky. As the scene progresses, we learn that they are looking for Captain Kirk who is orbital skydiving. When he lands, Chekov reminds him that the three of them are scheduled to attend the christening ceremony for the Enterprise-B the day after, to which Kirk replies, he’s not attending.
