The Incredible Hulk is one of the most powerful beings in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. Time and time again he’s managed to wipe the floor with his enemies, emerging both victorious and unscathed. So why did he decide to pull a ‘no-show’ for most of Infinity War? It seems strange, but there are a number of potential reasons.
It’s possible that after spending so much time as the people’s champion on Sakaar, this major defeat at the hands of Thanos has bruised the Hulk’s ego. Seeing as how the Hulk has never experienced such a crushing defeat, it’s feasible Hulk is afraid of Thanos and doesn’t want to face him again. One of the more insane fan theories suggests that Bruce Banner is really Loki in disguise which explains Banner’s struggles turning into the Hulk. Hulk’s general disdain for Banner might have finally reached a boiling point and could be a legitimate explanation, or maybe it’s the fact that no matter what Hulk does, the people of Earth fear and hate him and he has no desire to save them once again. Black Widow could play a part in all this too, as she’s the only one capable of soothing the beast and her relationship with Banner has gone unresolved since Age of Ultron. Or maybe at the end of the day it’s just the fact that the Russos recognized the Hulk was too powerful and wanted to take him out of the running for a bit so they could pave the way for a rousing big finale in Avengers 4.
