BMW’s reputation was built of offering sporty, fast, and sleek cars over its more austere German rivals. The BMW 3-Series has long been the leader in that philosophy but about 7 years ago, the company changed the name of the 3-series coupe and convertible to the #4Series. For 2021, the #BMWM440i begins an era of new design direction for the company with the #M440i being the most powerful current offering in America, until the new #M4 and #M3 go on sale. Its beaver tooth front end will undoubtedly attract stares but it may not be in a good way. Thankfully, the 382 HP turbo inline-6 cylinder engine and standard #xDrive AWD will deliver consistent 0-60 performance in the 4 second range.

Gaming has sure come a long way since the 1980’s hasn’t it? From games where we could see every single pixel to the incredible life-like graphics we have on PS5 and Xbox Series X, it’s been quite a journey. That being said, there’s some tech from the ‘80s and ‘90s that was well ahead of its time. Saying something was ahead of its time seems to be a cop out; a way of saying it failed because it was too good. Honestly though, even though all these gadgets we’ll be talking about did flop, they laid down the foundation of what was to come many years later.
Nintendo and Sega have experienced so many of these innovative failures. Just think of the Virtual Boy. It was supposed to be the next big thing in gaming, but all it gave us was a headache. Still, modern Virtual Reality owes something to the Virtual Boy. Even the Sega Dreamcast was a console ahead of its time. It had a built-in modem for online gaming in 1999. That’s impressive. Don’t get us started on the Power Glove and the Power Pad, though. While they were as gimmicky as it gets, they led to Wii motion controls and Dance Dance Revolution respectively, so it wasn’t all bad.
There’s more to these gaming gadgets than just that so enjoy the video, let us know what piece of gaming tech you think was the most ahead of its time in the comments section below and don’t forget to subscribe to TheGamer for more retro gaming content.
