The Japanese word Nintendo is said to loosely translate to “leave luck to heaven” in English, but that’s exactly what the company didn’t do with their successful home consoles…well, other than the Wii U. Nintendo made their own luck and became one of the greatest video game companies in the world, but it wasn’t always easy. Making controllers has never been the company’s strong suit, but one thing they’ve consistently done is innovate. Nintendo is always pushing innovation and that’s evident through their controllers so let’s take a look at the evolution of Nintendo controllers from the NES all the way to the Nintendo Switch.
It all began with the NES and their rectangular d-pad controller. It looks insanely simple compared to today’s controllers, but it set the stage of what was to come back in the day. The SNES controller was a big improvement compared to the NES controller. It was more rounded and had 4 new buttons. It allowed games to be a bit more sophisticated. While many games are divided about the N64 controller, we think it was alright. That being said, it didn’t compare to the GameCube controller. The Wii and Wii U both had really unique controllers, but the Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Cons are just something else entirely.
There’s more to the evolution of Nintendo controllers than just that so enjoy the video, let us know what your favorite Nintendo controller is in the comments section below and don’t forget to subscribe to TheGamer for more gaming content.
