Before the series premiere on Wed Oct 26, get an exclusive look into the making of Whitechapel, the newest addition to BBC America’s Dramaville – featuring interviews with stars Rupert Penry-Jones (DI Joseph Chandler), Phil Davis (DS Miles) & Steve Pemberton (Edward Buchan); creators & writers Caroline Ip & Ben Court; director S.J. Court (eps 1-3); executive producer Sally Woodward Gentle; and producer Marcus Wilson.
Go inside the six episode crime drama, “the first time… that anyone has attempted to do the Jack the Ripper story in a modern-day format,” and find out why Rupert Penry-Jones thinks this “modern police whodunit” is so “interesting” with “a new layer of characters.”
As Producer Marcus Wilson says, “History is repeating itself… and it’s down to our characters to break the wheel of history.”
A copycat killer is terrorizing London – and it’ll take everything these officers have to keep history from repeating. In East London, the police force is faced with the brutal and bloody history of their streets — from Jack the Ripper to the infamous crime twins Ronnie and Reggie Kray. Can these officers “solve the unsolveable and catch the most famous serial killer that ever lived”?

Here, Detective Inspector Joseph Chandler (Rupert Penry-Jones, MI-5, Cambridge Spies) and Detective Sargeant Miles (Phil Davis, Sherlock, Bleak House) first meet Edward Buchan (Steve Bemperton, The League of Gentlemen, Viva Blackpool), a renowned Ripper-ologist, in the investigation of what seems like an open-and-shut case, the killing of a woman in the Whitechapel neighborhood of East London.
However, when Buchan quickly points out the similarities between the present-day murder and the Jack the Ripper killings of 1888, the race is on to catch the copycat killer before he strikes again. In the words of Buchan: “You should be grateful, I’m giving you a head start.”
