Steven Spielberg returns to making fun popcorn movies with the adaption of Ready Player One. Part of what makes this book and film so cool is the copious amounts of pop culture references scattered throughout. Some are blink and you’ll miss it while others are super obscure and known only to the super fans. We saw the film and saw so many references (and missed even more we’re sure) and thought we’d share our findings with you! Some deal with the relationship between the book and the film, such as the subtle nod to the game Joust which book readers will understand. Others tie back to the trailer and the significance of the Rush song that played during it. Spielberg claimed he wouldn’t use any of his own films in Ready Player One, but a certain dinosaur may have made an appearance, sharing a scene with King Kong, Mad Max’s car, the batmobile, the A-Team’s van, Kaneda’s bike from Akira and the DeLorean from Back to the Future. The boombox from Say Anything is shown, playing the battle anthem in the film’s climax. John Hughes is referenced but the red ferrari is seen in the film, along with the Eagle 5 from Spaceballs, sharing a scene with the Iron Giant. Some Street Fighter references can be found in the film, along with Tracer and Lara Craft from Tomb Raider and there’s a blink and you’ll miss it reference to Robocop. We get a great fan service moment with Firefly and Gundam and we get some great moments for fans of the Halo games. Yup, this one has a lot of references.
